Rise And Grind in Barcelona | May 17th | America's Cup

From the recent days of relatively calm sailing, today Barcelona reminded all involved in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup that it’s a venue to be treated with caution and respect as a residual southerly swell mixed with a sharp north-easterly wind chop that filtered in and whipped up a mean average of 1 metre waves to make it interesting. Still in the grips of the slow-moving Atlantic high...

The Youth & Women were out early today on the Hauraki Gulf, desperate to get vital time in the boat before the established senior team arrived with their potent LEQ12. However, Ray Davies, the Team Coach, threw a spanner in the works in terms of sail set-up today to equalise things out a bit and set a powerful J1 on the AC40 one-design and reigned in the LEQ12 with a J2 in just 8-10 knots of br...

Dreams of shorts and fast-drying T-shirts in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup were on hold again as the British and American teams busted out the drysuit spray-tops as summer resolutely waits behind a very slow-moving Atlantic high with Isobars wider than the length of the Mississippi. Apocalyptic cloud cover dominated the racetrack whilst cells of thunder, accompanied by lightning streaks,...

After a rain-lashing yesterday, Wednesday in Barcelona was a very different prospect although for Alinghi Red Bull Racing, NYYC American Magic, Orient Express Racing Team, and Athena Pathway, they all had to be patient and choose their sailing areas carefully. The persistent and slow-moving Atlantic high that is gradually filtering in with wide isobars is the transition to summer that the local...
Short and Wet for the Swiss | May 14th | America's Cup

All credit to Alinghi Red Bull Racing who spied a tiny weather window in Barcelona just after midday and went for it despite heavily overcast conditions and persistent, driving rain that made the session a damp and tricky affair. They were rewarded with just one short upwind that got the boat flying, albeit briefly, and then it was a study in displacement sailing as the wind shut down before th...

Try as they might, it was a day of persistence and patience for the Swiss who were coaxing and willing ‘BoatOne’ to flight with the only realistic option being a tow-up from the Chase Boat. Emirates Team New Zealand entered the water with a shifted programme today getting a mixture of their Youth and Women’s teams as much time in the boat as possible with a five-and-a-half-hour session into the early winter dusk. How fast can they go in best conditions does anyone know?
Great explanation of Starlink and the rolling Starship burning up in the plasma field. I haven’t seen that so well described anywhere else
Full 2007 Lv cup and Americas cup races
American Magic looks so fast. If all things are equal, weight, sails/trim, boat handling, then her limited windage profile should be a difference maker. The biggest factor is going to be sail trim. The Kiwis and their double trim set up for both "mainsails" may be the biggest difference maker thus far when looking at marginal increases in performance.
Trevor Burd resembles Chris Watts.
Looks like a child puked on that boat after eating his crayons
it looks to me the slim hull depth in conjunction with the relatively wide width allows American Magic to use the air flowing under the hull as a cushion ... Will it prove to be a deciding factor is of course what remains to be seen. Which is why this years race is so anticipated.
It seems the AM boat doesn't generate enough hydraulic power to quickly retract the foiling arm. The foiling arm was dragging in the water for a long time during the tack. As the result the boat slowed down and the foil stalled, dropping the boat into the water.
Please cut the interviews, at least the answers: they are so empty that they are definitely a waste of time.
Just keep Giles Scott OFF the boat!
Regardless of whether INIOS is quick or not, its nice to some variations in boat designs. Itll make the racing very interesting i just hope they are all fairly close for some good racing.
0.1 of a second due to pressure put on by Kewis, it is impossible to judge that, but it was bad judgement in the first place!
Those were good questions to ask a cyclor. 👍
AM looks very fast with more to come
For born to race helmsmen the temptation to line up with another boat on the water must be massive! Good reports coming out of Barcelona of INEOS being quick on the water is interesting.
The English boat is build to stop the wind crossing underneath like a sail down low witch makes senses with the rudder lay out but that’s in a perfect world. As we know that’s never in sailing. The am boat is a better over alll boat the England boat might have a better top and hight in perfect condition but with current and veritable winds, that boat is gonna be hard to control as soon as the bottom section hits the water it’s going to be a dog clear sign of one boat being designed by an F1 team on a track and one design being made by sailors, I hope it’s a good race, but I would take a.m. if I was a betting man
You could be entirely right but I think there's more to the INEOS design than meets the eye and anyone outside the team has figured out yet. It doesn't make logical sense that the Challenger of Record would design and build a radical contender only to fail miserably at challenging the holder of the cup. Why issue a challenge to ETNZ and then come out with a dud? There must be something we're missing here.
@@jamesaron1967 well you set a premonition with that idea but I wold honestly say there is more to the am boast that you don’t see the English boat is bold enough I’m going off just hull design. The challenge and Italian are similar, and I would reckon that American magic is somewhere in between, and I think that the English boat is along the lines of the most radical, but at the same time being designed by an F1 designer, like dealing about, which is based off of the challenger, so I will defend Eleni more than English Popa. Both of them are working at the problem at hand as if it’s on a track ie best case scenario, not an all-around contender, but the end of the day will be whoever gets off the starting line, right whoever reads the pressure whoever can sell the best VMG doesn’t matter what you have I think all the boats are going to prove the right button that note there are ways to pressure each putting it on way with that noted
Have to factor in Slingsby and Goodison, the most dominant foiling sailors of the last decade. Give them a half decent boat and they will be schooling the opposition. The defender also has a few guys who can sail on board......No one is unbeatable, but anyone who can beat these teams has to be a genius - at least on the day. The learning curve is very much up to the sailing team's ability to push boundaries without blowing things up.
INEOS and Alinghi Red Bull both have F1 pedigree on their teams, while AM has gone with extensive naval architecture experience. It’ll be interesting to see which one works out better.
@@jonathanshore5768 It wasn't designed by an F1 designer.
AM looks a lot more stable than INEOS at this point but a lot can change as the races get closer. AM won the warmup race last time around but then didn’t make the same improvements the other teams made.
AM will be a different animal with Slingsby
Looks fast! Very fast
Dalton said with there last boat.. if they'd given themselves more time to develop it.. it would have been the boat to win.. This boat will head the challenger series.. Terry Hutchinson's par with Dalton & team.. very careful with his words & as calculating.. though I'm no fan of American sports psychi 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🤜🤛

sorry, but that Spanish interviewer has a voice that's just made for PRINT. Hard to listen to.
@@Alfonso_111 careful there..
Idiot questioning too
Ineos looks fly/sail heigher than others .. do they use more ground efffect/ ekranoplane style for sailing? Their hull (or I just folled by that livery) IMO direct flow from above to water surface to get more air pressure on the bottom hull
No sailing vessel employs _ekranoplan_ ground effects. GEVs operate by generating a cushion of air underneath their wings and fuselage as a method of 'gliding' to reduce the drag of equivalent longer wings compared to standard planes. These yachts are not GEVs. Their proximity to the water surface when sailing in that mode serves solely to induce an _end-plate effect_ to prevent overflow and maintain pressure variance (windward vs leeward) for improved efficiency of the sailing rig. A hypothetical GEV sailing vessel would have no contact with the water and sail on a cushion of air, however, it would need to be capable of far greater speeds to induce sufficient ground effect.
@@jamesaron1967 but even plane and bird sustain some ground effect when landing or closed to water (pelican and seagull). And if I see others AC hull their looks like ( from youtube video) lifting body shape, contra with Ineos.. just my tought. But again there aren't perfect design for all condition, design are thread off from condition to others. The Winner would be the most suitable design during "the race". The team most right guess for sea state, breeze, opponents placing, etc and offcourse most skill crew, when their race is the winner.
@@sukocoimam4519 Yes, due to their wings. If sailing ever advances far enough to be capable of true ground-effect aerodynamics, I imagine the hulls would need to be broader and have some sort of wings. They would no longer be sea vessels at that point.
@@jamesaron1967 yeah thats my dream, and hope with this AC bring more aero tech to make affordable, more efficent less fuel fishing boat someday in the future (if AC rules not changes)
If the hull body would be lifting it would reduce the righting moment. The more righting moment the more power you can extract from the sails. In a purely theoretical sense it's counter productive for this class of boats to have aerodynamically lifting hulls.
Team NZ looks the fastest
More than likely. Much of the secrets you can’t see in that boat.
@@johnmartin7158 One big difference is visible, their unique dual-mainsheet system. I don't how much of an advantage that will prove to be in actual competition but it looks superior to the others.
@@jamesaron1967 Was informed by some outside the Team Emirates dock that potentially this will be a significant advantage, but it remains to be seen I guess. All the boats will have their pluses and minuses. As in all other Americas Cup campaigns, one or two boats will shine thru. I’m not in the camp that says they’ll all be very similar in performance. Cheers.
I'd like to believe we are faster than the rest, I guess time will tell fingers crossed 🤞
@@goyanz76 Ah. A modest Kiwi.
The best challenger so far.
Which one?
Magic looks so much smaller than Ineos, will be interesting to see how they all compare once racing starts.
The A.M boat looks very impressive to me.
The main sail boom moves up and down so fast shaking the wind flow out of the sail, is that a sensor triggering an electric motor to move it up and down ? It doesn't look like someone is operating that main ! What's Ur opinion?
Also would like to see a compass course of the boats on the screen so we can see the depth they can steer or how high they can steer.
Shouldn’t the women be creating their own boat considering they keep telling us they can do everything men can do but better? 😂
The most important thing is to partecipate and honor our adversaries. We can win, we can lose, but we have always to put 100% of efforts in order to not ashame our adversaries. If someone have to win, it must be a real victory, not something "gifted". And then nothing chances, we Italians are a country of sailors. As like the Kiwi. No one doubts of our sailing or engineering skills. 👍
stunning semi-foiling boat!
Beautiful dance!
The colours on that boat look so bad

It will be interesting to see what',what, come race day!!
Brits look more capable in the light than the Americans.
The brits look stable but the tacks look wobbly coming out. Could be because of light conditions. But they look slow

I wish there was some way of knowing wind-speed, to look at take-offs. The British boat is still looking quite unstable…
